Who doesn’t love free stuff? I certainly do… especially when it’s GOOD free stuff, and the Lonely Planet’s book The Word’s Best Street Food: Where To Find It And How To Make It is certainly that. Browsing through just a few pages of this book makes me start craving good street food and searching for my passport.

The Worlds Best Street Food CoverThere are two sections in the book, a larger one about savory foods and a second filled with sweets. Some of the savory items are what you’d expect: tamales in Mexico, gyros in Greece, etc.  Luckily, though, most of the pages are filled dishes that I’d never even heard of, much less tried. Kelewele in Ghana is spiced deep-fried plantains. In Argentina you’ll find the Choripan, a chorizo on French-bread sandwich covered with a sauce of parsley, garlic, onions, tomatoes and herbs. Cevapcici is a robust Croatian sausage-skewer, similar to the koefte of Turkey, where you’ll also find Balik Ekmek, a lemony fried fish fillet served on bread with lettuce and tomatoes.

Many of the sweets are also predictable (or maybe I just have a soft-spot for desserts) but still tantalizing, including baklava from Greece, crepes from France, and churros from Spain. Again, though, I found plenty of new items, such as Sfenj from Morocco (sugar covered deep-fried sweet bread), and Martabak Manis from Indonesia (and the Middle East).

And if you’re not willing (or able) to travel to all of these places to try their street food, you’ll also find the recipes to make the dishes yourself, along with some really nice photography of the locations and foods to give you a helping hand.
